I've been photographing at the track for some time now, beginning in 1993, and properly accredited in my own right since 1995. It's a challenging and at times trying environment, but one that is also immensely rewarding. If I was to name one goal as any sort of 'mission statement' in my work, it is the creation of images that makes people look, and that inspire an emotional connection. I wish this connection, above all else, to be directly with the individual horse I am photographing, because I continue to operate from a principle that the horse is everything. But almost as important is to create a connection with the sport itself.

My firm belief is that it is NOT enough to market the industry as a 'party venue'. I don't see this as self sustaining in terms of crowd numbers outside of the really major carnival days. Neither will it encourage those venturing onto the track to think about engaging in the industry in a more substantial way, such as investing in a horse, or pursuing a career within the industry. Over the past 10 or so years, I have worked to create images that demonstrate the strength and speed of the thoroughbred, as well as their sheer size. I don't want to produce an image that makes the horse appear stationary, or be devoid of action and theatre. And I don't like the feeling where you have to squint to really see the horse and rider. I like close ups, where you can see the emotion, and the tenacity and the courage. I like to see the horse's face, particularly their eye. The eyes, which are the window to the soul, tell you so much about an individual, and there is nothing more beautiful than the soft brown eye of a horse.
