Bronwen Healy Photography

The Image is Everything

About Bronwen:

I first picked up a camera at the races on 1992 Epsom Handicap Day, and in 1995 became fully accredited with the VRC (then the principal club), AJC and STC, and I have been photographing at the track every year since this time. Over the past 18 months I have specialised more in stud imagery.

Certainly a photographic style has evolved. I give much of the credit for my personal style to my one time editor, Brian Blackwell. He gifted me my first magazine cover, and advice that has stuck with me since. He said "Bronwen, there are many photographers doing exactly what you do and you all take the same photographs. You must make yourself different. Give me something different, something 'off-beat'.

My dear friend, Les Carlyon, also deserves special mention. He opened my eyes to the romance of the turf. I was always in love with horses, with Phar Lap, Kingston Town my heroes, and fictional characters such as the Silver Brumby, the Black Stallion, and Thunderhead series being my favourite books (there was no Harry Potter back then), and I still re-read these books today. But Les' writings reinforced the love of the horse. I recall hours of painstaking work cutting out then carefully gluing his essays on 'the black horse' into my many scrapbooks. And stroking the pictures of the horses. Martin King another good friend on track, was probably the key reason I became involved. He was THE racing photographer in the days of Kingston Town. His work was wonderful, and I admired him greatly, and it was a good experience working with him. He has vast experience and is wise. I frustrate him sometimes, when I go marching up the track to try to produce something spectacular, and he ruefully shakes his head when I bugger it up, but he also claps me on the back, and lets me know he loves the picture when the gamble pays off. The lovely Colin Bull and Gary Wild, good friends and colleagues, also do me the immense favour of being able to leave at least some of my gear with them (sorry about the sore backs!) when flying back and forth on the one day, which sees me having to run the gauntlet on the carry-on rules on the flight down.

So I strive for excellence in quality, using only the very best equipment, and seek to produce an image that stands alone. I want clients to use my images because I took them, and they believe that they are the best, not because of a hope that I will be the cheapest. I hope the viewer will stop, think, and wonder 'did Bronwen Healy take that?'. Above all, I seek to portray all that is great about horses, and thoroughbred racing in particular. Of wonderfully talented, and courageous horses, their frequently theatrical, and skills riders, and admirably committed trainers. And to faithfully depict speed, power, grace and regal presence in every horse that I am privileged to photograph.

Areas of Expertise:

Primarily I specialise in horses, and thoroughbreds at that. Most of my work has been on track, but recently I have shifted to stud (conformation shots, general stud and foals) and in particular, stallion photography . My major clients include Vinery Stud, Arrowfield Stud , Darley Australia and Waikato Stud, with their 2009 Stallion brochures now featuring my work. My work is published by nearly all the major industry publications, both print and online, and I held the position of Official Photographer for Racing and Sports for over 10 years.

I also do equestrian photography locally around Canberra, when I am not away interstate with thoroughbred commitments. With two young children of my own, I am available for family portraits and specialise in photographing children at play, and capturing their personalities in unstaged and natural environments. During the cold Canberra winter I can be found at the soccer grounds in Weston Creek, sporting a large camera and trying to encourage my 8yo son's mind back to the game, from wherever in his imagination it's wandered to this time!
